Friends of the Graz Museum

The Society of Friends of the Graz Museum has been an integral part of the Graz Museum and Graz’s urban society for the past fifty years. We offer fans of the museum as well as anyone interested in urban culture and history a platform for sharing and discussing ideas and opinions. The focus of the Friends’ activities is to contribute to the preservation of the diverse heritage of Graz and to preserve it for future generations. Moreover, it is important to us to support the mission of the Graz Museum to offer the residents and visitors* of Graz a democratic and as accessible as possible experience of its collections and exhibitions.

The Graz Museum sees itself as a custodian of the life stories, biographies and related artefacts of Graz residents. These objects add significant information to the Graz Museum’s collection from a time that can no longer be fully evaluated today. On the one hand, they provide a closer look at past events and, on the other, they can answer questions about some of the burning issues of the present. This sponsorship of objects is a project close to the hearts of the Friends, through which we support the Graz Museum’s urban museum collection in a participatory way.

Last year, the Friends* of the GrazMuseum once again financially supported the activities and acquisitions of the museum with their contributions. With a total of around 290,000 euros over the past few decades!

Conrad Kreuzer: Teil IV der Panoramaansichten vom Schlossberg

Thanks to the support of the Society of Friends of the GrazMuseum, the Graz Museum was able to acquire the fifth painting of the Panoramic Views of the Schloßberg by the Biedermeier painter Conrad Kreuzer.

Conrad Kreuzer’s Schlossberg Panorama is the largest known closed pictorial representation of the city of Graz in the nineteenth century. Looking at Kreuzer’s bright, sunlit paintings in their shadowless silence, a certain presence of the world of the Biedermeier era that disappeared a long time ago arises.

Kreuzer’s Schloßberg Panorama from the years 1840/41 consists of six individual pictures. With the help of the Society of Friends of the Graz Museum, the GrazMuseum succeeded in acquiring the fifth individual picture from this series in May 2008.
The picture is a variant of the view found in Gustav Schreiner’s “Grätz” and the larger view of the Chain Bridge, which is also owned by the Graz Museum.

In the foreground, the viewer sees the Schlossberg slope, including the Bell-founder’s House. On the peninsular shore between the Mur River and the Mühlgang canal, you can see the paper mill “Bruckmaiersche Hadernstampfe”. The roof contains drying rooms; in the garden, large cardboard sheets are laid out for drying.
The Körösistraße, with buildings only on its east side, runs parallel to the Mühlgang canal.
On the left side of Körösistraße, there is the Military Swimming School, which was built between 1838 and 1841; on the right side, along Körösistraße, one sees the upper floor and the roof of the Kienreich paper factory, which can be recognised by the roof truss with the drying rooms.
Behind, there is the Main Mill and, further to the north, the Rottal Mill, which can be identified by two high gables. The nail factory is located to the left of it.
A little further back, the viewer sees the church of St. Veith. Opposite, on the right bank of the Mur River, you can see the Calvary; in the background, you can see the ruin of Gösting Castle.
